After the release of the blue dye and large paint series flooring, the designer Mei Shuzhi was invited to design this time. After more than one year of research and development, the "Oriental architectural scale" series flooring was launched in March 2023. Based on the scale relationship of the three parts of the oriental architecture, namely, rectangular brick, Square brick and stone board, Ugan concept object reconstructs the new "floor" size and realizes the application of the oriental architectural scale in modern space.
Scale in Oriental Architecture
As a basic attribute of architecture, scale is closely related to building materials and space environment. From the royal court to the brick and tile, all have their own scale relationship.
The three materials of brick rectangular brick(Qing brick), Square brick (Jin brick) and stone board also have corresponding scale relations in Chinese architecture. The bricks are the smallest, and they are generally laid in corridors and turnstiles; The square bricks take the second place, representing a formal and dignified feeling, which is similar to the laying of the hall; The stone slab is the largest and has a broad sense of scale. It can be used to pave the courtyard. These three different scale relations exist in harmony in Chinese architecture for a long time, reflecting a state of stability and broadness, which is the Chinese people's grasp of the ruler and the pursuit of natural and elegant aesthetic realm between the two.
Material conversion of brick, stone and wood
The earliest ruler of the rectangular brick, the Square brick and the stone board should be related to the body. The size of the brick may be related to the convenient of the hand it holds, and the size of the stone board is estimated that it is related to the mined materials and transported materials, which are all the results of natural and local conditions. These three kinds of ruler are not so clear. Every age, even every craftsman, will have subtle changes. However, no matter how different the specific ruler is, we can feel that this is the scale of the board, and the same is true of the brick. Whether it's one rule seven cun or two rule two cun, we can see that it's a type relationship, and we can also know its origin and history.
Based on these three clear and recognizable beautiful relations, Ugan concept of the object realizes the material transformation between the three dimensional relations in the form of the floor, bricks and stone, and designs the "Oriental architectural scale" series of floors with the scale relations of 5:1, 1:1 and 3:1, which makes the oriental architectural scale continue in modern space.
"Oriental architectural scale" series flooring
Ugan concept "Oriental Building Scale" series of floors have three types, namely, strip floor, square floor and plate floor, with the proportion of 5:1, 1:1 and 3:1 respectively, breaking the size ratio of 10:1 in the west, and retaining our mark of the three dimensions of the Oriental building, namely, strip brick, brick and plate, which is not only the respect for culture and understanding of the law, but also the aesthetic itself of the East, and is more suitable for the modern architecture and user needs of the East, It can make the floor produce a strange and wonderful relationship, like a dialogue through time.
These three scales have a corresponding relationship. Through different combinations, we can get a variety of shapes. Different from the traditional way of paving, this design thinking makes the floor more interesting. The designer can match the scene to do different splicing designs.
These three dimensions are converted from the scale of blue bricks, square bricks and stone slabs in the eastern architecture, but different from the cold material characteristics of the three, the floor makes the space more warm and moist due to the properties of wood, and at the same time, the structural design of all-birch base material can be applied to the geothermal pavement requirements of modern space.
The floor is made of wide board, and the surface is treated with special technology to show the collapse texture formed by natural shrinkage of wood in the air. There is a certain gap between the plates, which represents the trace of time.
